Swinger lifestyle glossary — the terms explained
The scene has its own language, and it is shorter than it looks: almost every word abbreviates one sentence about who is involved and what was agreed. This glossary explains the terms you meet in profiles, messages and at parties — plainly, without judgement, the way the scene itself uses them.

Why does the scene use these words?
Because they save a long conversation. «Couple, soft swap, same room, looking for couples or a unicorn» is one line that tells another couple most of what they need to know about whether you fit. The words are tools for being clear — and clarity is what lets matching couples find each other. Every term describes a dynamic agreed and wanted by everyone involved.

The terms, explained
- Swinging / the lifestyle
- A couple, with both partners' consent, having sexual experiences with others. «The lifestyle» is the scene's own name for it.
- Soft swap
- Exploring with others — kissing, touching and more — without intercourse with anyone but your own partner.
- Full swap
- Intercourse with others. Says nothing about where; see same room.
- Same room / separate rooms
- Whether the couple stays in the same room throughout (same room) or not (separate rooms).
- MMF / MFM / FFM
- Who is in a threesome: M for man, F for woman, in the order usually named. MFM is often used when the woman is the centre and the men are not with each other.
- Unicorn
- A single person — usually a woman — who joins a couple for a threesome. The word plays on how rare they are.
- Hotwife
- A woman whose partner encourages and takes pride in her having experiences with others, with full openness between the two.
- Cuckold
- The same dynamic seen from the partner's side, often with an element of humiliation both want.
- Stag / vixen
- Like hotwife, without humiliation: the stag is the proud partner, the vixen the woman who has experiences with others.
- Bull
- A third person — usually a man — who joins a couple in a hotwife or stag/vixen dynamic.
- Voyeur / exhibitionist
- Enjoying watching (voyeur) or being watched (exhibitionist) — common at parties, with no expectation of more.
- ENM (ethical non-monogamy)
- The umbrella term for every relationship form where multiple partners are agreed and open to everyone involved — swinging, open relationships, polyamory.
- Open relationship
- A relationship where partners may have sexual experiences outside it, often separately, within agreed boundaries.
- Polyamory
- Several loving relationships at once, with openness between everyone involved. About relationships, not only sex.
- Play / playdate
- The scene's word for a sexual encounter, and for an arrangement to have one.
- Meet and greet
- A social meeting — often at a bar — where couples meet with no expectation of more. Where most couples begin.
- Take-over
- An event where a group hires a whole venue — a hotel, a resort, a club — for the scene.
- House rules
- A club's own rules — couples' nights, dress code, no phones, where what is allowed. Read before you go.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does MFM mean in a profile?
A threesome with two men and one woman where the woman is the centre and the men are usually not with each other. MMF is used when the men are also with each other — but usage varies, so ask.
What is the difference between a hotwife and a vixen?
Both have experiences with others with their partner's support. Hotwife/cuckold often includes an element of humiliation both want; stag/vixen is the same dynamic without it.
What is a unicorn?
